There is a place in the northern part of Montenegro where tourists have been rushing from all over the world for many decades: they come to admire one of the most interesting sights – the Đurđevića Tara Bridge, whose tragic history still resonates in human hearts.
The Đurđevića Tara Bridge: tragedy and glory
At the end of the thirties of the last century, a unique bridge connected the two sides of a deep canyon, at the bottom of which the wide and fast river Tara runs. Then it was the highest arched bridge in Europe: its height from the river is more than 170 meters.
The author of the project was Miyat Troyanovich, and the work was led by Isaac Russo and Lazar Yanukovych. When the troops of the occupying Italian army entered the Balkans, fierce fighting by the partisans against the invaders began in the mountains.
The bridge, thrown over the canyon, was the only place through which the Nazis could move to the other side, therefore, its explosion could paralyze the advance of the enemy troops. The bullet dents, still preserved on the concrete from which the Đurđevića Tara Bridge was built, remind us of the fierce battles that were fought here.
Lazar Yanukovych, who had built this bridge just a few years before, volunteered to blow up his own creation in the way it could be restored later.
Knowing all the technical features of the design, the engineer performed a truly delicate explosion: he managed to destroy only the central arch, and the rest of the bridge was barely damaged.
The fascists started a real hunt for the engineer Yanukovych and after a while they grabbed him and executed him. In memory of those events, a monument to the brave engineer was erected near the bridge.
Long life was destined for the bridge itself: after the restoration of the destroyed arch and major repairs in 1946, it has been serving people for more than half a century
Two movies were shot about what happened in these places during the war, namely:
- Yugoslav “Most”, and
- the British “Storm Force from Navarone.”
This is just one of those cases where the name sticking with someone’s light hand turned out to be more tenacious than the glory of the deceased war hero: Đurđević was only the owner of a farm located nearby.
Nobody knows where he is and what happened to him, but his name remains forever the name of one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe.
How to get to the Đurđevića Tara Bridge
Today, the Đurđevića Tara Bridge is a powerful structure about 400 meters long, consisting of five arches, but it is too narrow for the movement of large transport: two large trucks can miss each other here with difficulty.
It is very simple to find the Đurđevića Tara Bridge on the map. The bridge is located near the Mojkovac-Zabljak highway, on which buses pass several times a day. You can see on the map that it is located at the crossroads connecting the roads to Mojkovac, Plevl and Zabljak, so you can get here from any of these towns.
It is believed, however, that the most convenient way to the bridge lies from Zabljak: you need to drive only a little more than 20 kilometers for 2.5 Euros – and you are there.
You can try to ride a bike there, but the way back along the mountain serpentine is not an easy test even for extremely enduring and well-trained people: after all, lifting at an angle of 15 degrees is not a joke.
